Calculated Risk in the Flesh.

Just over two years ago, Christoffer Malmström took the leap to start Ridge Capital. The decision was both nerve-wracking and exciting, driven by a desire to manage and build something from the ground up. Today, he reflects on that choice as the best career decision he’s ever made.

“I remember the feeling when Måns Levin and I started Ridge Capital. It was a lot of hard work, but at the same time incredibly satisfying. We set ambitious goals from the outset, and now I have to pinch myself when I see how much we’ve achieved in such a short time.”

Christoffer’s interest in finance started early. A school trip to New York with a visit to Lehman Brothers made it clear. With a degree from the Stockholm School of Economics and experience from leading roles at UBS and Park Square Capital in London and New York, he has worked on everything from leveraged finance to private debt and public bond investments.

Despite an impressive career at some of the world’s most renowned financial institutions, the lure of doing something different—and his own—was strong. The opportunity to build a company with a corporate culture to be proud of, and to create real results, was a challenge he couldn’t pass up.

“There’s something special and fulfilling about being an entrepreneur. Having the opportunity to shape both the company’s direction and the team’s dynamics has been incredibly rewarding.”

“I take risks – but always with control”

Christoffer has long had a passion for skiing, and this is reflected in his work as a portfolio manager. Whether he’s standing atop a snow-covered Alpine peak or analyzing a potential investment, his strategy remains the same: control the risk.

“I love all types of terrain when it comes to skiing, no matter the conditions. I like taking risks, but always in a calculated way. That philosophy is at the core of how we operate at Ridge Capital. To achieve our objectives and deliver strong returns, we have to take risks – otherwise, we’re not doing our job. But those risks must always be measured and controlled.”

When not at work, Christoffer can often be found in Åre, where his family has an apartment, or on one of Ridge Capital’s annual team ski trips. The most recent destination was Cervinia.

Career, family, and new priorities

With the arrival of his newborn daughter, Christoffer’s personal life has changed in recent months, giving a new sense of focus.

“Becoming a father has truly shifted my priorities. It has helped me be more present, both at work and at home. My mornings and evenings are all about my daughter and family. In between, and afterward, I’m fully dedicated to my work.”

Outside of portfolio management, family life, and skiing, Christoffer plays the piano and works out daily. It’s a way to unwind and recharge for the day ahead.

A company culture that inspires

At Ridge Capital, Christoffer and his team have cultivated a company culture rooted in responsibility, freedom, and open dialogue.

“We’re not looking for yes-men. It’s important that we challenge each other and work together to find the best solutions. At the same time, we strive to create an environment where everyone can grow and develop, both as individuals and as a team.”
